Winnie the War Winner!

This Saturday we will acknowledge ANZAC Day at the club with a short presentation of a significant Australian wartime radio story.

In 1942, the 2/2 Independent Company built a radio from scraps after they were trapped in Portugese Timor with 3,000 Japanese. Australia thought they were all captured, but 300 of them regrouped in the jungle and then tied up the Japanese for about a year by running a guerrilla campaign. The radio they built was nicknamed 'Winnie the War Winner', and is now an exhibit in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Ian (VK3KO) will outline the campaign and describe the famous 'first contact' made between Sparrow Force and Darwin.

Date: This Saturday, 25 April

Time: 1030
