WHAT'S GOING ON?

Hey Members,

FYI...

VK7RMD REPEATER

As usual I monitor our club repeater VK3RUV, most of the day and enjoy our chats with our members.

However due to some 2M Tropospheric Ducting, I am receiving the Tasmanian Repeater VK7RMD far stronger than our own VK3RUV.

And if I change my output CTCSS Tone to 141.3Hz, I can easily have a chat on the VK7RMD Repeater.

This is bit of a pain for me, as if someone is using the Tasmania Repeater, I cannot hear our own VK3RUV Repeater. Maybe the WIA Repeater allocation team should have considered this?

What is Tropospheric Ducting?

Yes.. may have too.. I secleted a Repeater that had less chance of interefering with our repeater, but the so called experts at the WIA decided to select one that is across water which is know for high ducting. So called experts at the WIA.

The article reminded me of the time when the club would set up a contest station at Foster north. Gerard vk3ger arranged with the farmer that we could set up a full contest station in his field at the highest point of his farm. The farmer use to move his cattle to another field two weeks before the contest date. This was to bake the cows dropping so they were hard and would not stick to your shoes?

Gerard took me there several weeks before the contest to introduce me to the farmer, and to work out what level of equipment we required. If my memory is good I think we set up five full stations.

Whilst on top of…

Hi Roy,

Yes the Tropo Ducting can cause issues too.. Looks like the so called experts at the WIA did not consider the Tasy Repeater causing a problem for our repeater... If they had of stuck with my suggestion of frequencies, there would be far less of an issue with ducting as the one I selected, was far away and over mountains, not water like their selection. Bloody idiots!! I know how easy it is to get into a repeater over the sea, as I can work Tassy Repeaters on 5 watts Handy when conditions are good.. But this does not help our own repeater situation !

Cheers.

Have a look at the Hepburn charts. It shows strong troppo over Bass strait between the top of VK7 and bottom of VK3 - exactly as Craig says.

Tropospheric Ducting Forecast for VHF & UHF Radio & TV

Interesting!

I have no idea how these charts are generated.
