My friend went to the Everything Open conference in Canberra and came across this article encouraging everyone to see radio as a universal asset, not just a nostalgic hobby for old folks!

I think that when we have natural disasters like the recent fires then there is a real need for people with comms experience and equipment. Lessons learnt in POTA and SOTA can also add great features to local communities.
Within LROCV we actually have a person who organises members to go out as volunteers to help rebuild fences etc. There are other organisations like BandAid who do similar work and are often the first port of call by authorities to go into bush fire raised areas.
This begs the question: "Is there a skill set that we could offer in cases of natural disasters, or are there others already offering this help?"
